Exhibit: From Combat to Canvas
On Display March 1 – 25, Cousin’s Gallery – Level 3
Artist Reception, Saturday, March 12, 1 – 4 p.m.Blair-Caldwell Branch Library
The exhibit will showcase the art and photography of local veterans as well as work about the veteran experience. Ranging from painting and photography to sculpture, the work will offer veterans an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and share their current creative outlet. Invited artists include: Jerry de La Cruz, John Davis, Jess DuBois, Dwayne Glapion, Jud Hart, Ted Moore, Andrienne Norris, Bill Potts, David Stevens, Floyd Tunson, Jerry Vigil, and Irving Watts.

The Art of Being Natural is a portrait documentary series highlighting the Urban Naturals in the Denver, Colorado, area. These individuals have chosen to refrain from ingesting processed foods, using dangerous yet common chemicals and products in their every day life. Choosing a holistic lifestyle, participants have chosen to live organically through nutrition, lifestyle, and most importantly personal hair style.
Artist Statement:
Tya Anthony, is a visual communicator, creative director and photographer, whose work ranges from portraiture to alternate process installations. Anthony has featured photographic works in visual media outlets nationally. Tya is currently exploring Identity within her contemporary art as she prepares to join an in-depth exploratory artist residency program in Denver. Anthony’s works are an investigation into representations of concrete events as well as depictions and ideas that can only be realized in photography. Tya Anthony currently lives and works in Denver.

The Family Tree: A Lynching in Georgia, a Legacy of Secrets, and My Search for the Truth with Author Karen Branan

Harris County, Georgia, 1912. A white man, the beloved nephew of the county sheriff, is shot dead on the porch of a black woman. Days later, the sheriff sanctions the lynching of a woman and three men, all African American and all of them innocent. In The Family Tree, Karen Branan, the great-granddaughter of the sheriff, digs deep into the past to deliver a shattering historical memoir a century after that horrific day.
Bio:Karen Branan is a veteran journalist who has written for newspapers, magazines, stage, and television for almost fifty years. Her work has appeared in Life, Mother Jones, Ms., Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Today’s Health, Learning, Parents, Star Tribune (Minneapolis), The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and on PBS, CBS, ABC, CBC, BBC and CNN.
From Renaissance to Revolution: An Afternoon of Literature by African American Women Writers

To celebrate Women’s History month, we invite you to come hear a panel of literature lovers from the community read historic works written by African American women. The panel will present a diverse sampler of poetry and prose from different eras, including pieces from the Harlem Renaissance to the Revolutionary Black Power eras of the sixties and seventies, and beyond.
Bio:
Wendy Robinson is a writer and facilitator who grew up in the Five Points area.
We Don’t Wear Capes: A Reading by Denver Comic Book Creators

Denver has an exciting comic book community, filled with women and men who travel the country sharing their work. Scheduled one week before DINK, (Denver’s new convention for independent comics), this is your chance to meet and talk with some of these creators about their work! Some will be sharing excerpts from their comics; others will be drawing while you’re there.
