Wow ~ 50s Kitsch is fun! Our Digital Collections are a rich source of images of interiors, with many from 19th Century homes cluttered with bric-a-brac, taxidermy and Chinoiserie. But a less prominent genre of decor is that of the 1950s, a time of cleaner lines, synthetic materials, and bold patterns.

While a simple search for “interiors,” or “decor interiors” brings a huge number of such images, more focused searches will result in those shots of the daring new styles people were experimenting with in the Eisenhower years. Try a search for “Hoffman Heights,” to see model photos from a classic post war subdivision, or “California Bungalow” to see a different selection.

Another strategy is to search by an architect’s name, if you see it in the record, such as Hedrich-Blessing, to find more of what you’re looking for. Home interiors are a favorite subject for photographers, and our collection has a wide selection to browse through. Good luck finding some of those garish curtains, though – Thrift Stores are the place for that.
“Wow Photo Wednesday” celebrates photographs in the Denver Public Library’s Digital Collections that have “The Wow Factor” and that highlight the myriad delightful nuggets in our database.
